Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) is a set of 8 linear cognitive restructuring & reprocessing phases which target thought patterns. EMDR involves being dually attended - paying attention to ones thought patterns while also paying attention to an external stimuli. EMDR utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and relaxation techniques. CBT and relaxation techniques can allow clients to connect what they know with what they feel. EMDR has been clinically proven to lower the disturbance of cognitive memories.
EMDR clients must be able to describe in words what is and/or has happened to them that is bothering them in their present. Clients must be relatively stable, therapeutically allied and cognitively available. EMDR typically involves 12-24 sessions on one or more targets/events.
